New blog localeI've teamed up with women's fiction author Autumn Piper to keep a new blog - Piper PatterCheck us out for industry news, crazy writers' insights, and a laugh thrown in here and there. Outside Looking In?I’m officially out. My RWA membership expired yesterday. I’ve had to do some hard thinking about whether or not to rejoin. So far I came up with this list of what I “get” from RWA. Hmmm.

Their list of approved agents. Well – so far the RWA agents have given me the same consideration as the non-RWA agents. And they do all accept queries from non-members.

Listings for their approved pubs. All 3 of my publishing contracts are with non-RWA publishers. Nuff said.

Industry news. Can’t think of any life-changing news delivered to me via RWA. Although I do love the email supplement with all the article links.

Lots of catty Letters to the Editor in the RWR, condemning or pimping erotica. (I confess, I’ve enjoyed these most.)

A discount on advertising in RWR. Well, this one might get me back. If I decide to place a BIG ad, or more than one in a year. Otherwise it’s cheaper to pay the steeper nonmember price.

Conventions? LOL…LOL…Still LOL. I’ll try to renew my membership before 2011 so I can meet all my writing pals at Nationals in NYC. Probably.

Great articles on craft. Some might consider it blasphemy to mention, but I get these for FREE via email from Writer’sDigest.com. Industry updates and submission leads, too.

First Sales announcements. If you get the RWR, you know that’s no longer a draw. This month I had to look through the mag twice to find the section. Meanwhile, 4 pages of photos were dedicated to Nationals. Somebody refresh me: what percentage of dues-paying RWA members attended? Nationals is great fun for those who can go, and certainly interesting to look at from afar. But couldn’t those photos have gone up on the web site, since we’ve been told time and again how precious is the print space in our RWR?

True enough, if I wasn’t so broke, I might just send in the fees and save myself the brain strain. But bottom lines are getting tough lately, and it’s hard for me to justify a $75-a-year magazine subscription. (Not when I can almost buy a tank of gas for that much!) I write women’s fiction, and don’t like to follow all the old “rules” of romance writing. So I’m something of a round peg in the square slot of traditional romance writers – not always a comfy fit. Maybe I’ll try to flap my wings a bit and see how it feels to be a published, non-RWA writer. And splurge on name brand milk and bread this week. Piper DennaRomance is sexy!
